Neighbors Refused to Help Black Mom As Sons Were Swept Away During the Storm

This story is tragic. Yet, it is more horrific considering the father, Damian is an EMT and was out rescuing people from the storm while his own sons were drowning without help. The mother, Glenda Moore, is a nurse who also spends her days nursing others to health.

Most of the country is now aware of the heart-breaking story of Glenda Moore, who is now going to bury her two young sons after Hurricane Sandy swept both of the boys out of her arms to their deaths.  The boys, 2 and 4 years old, were just a few yards apart when police found them, and both had died a horrible death from drowning.

New Yorkers are not known for their hospitality and kindness, but anyone who’s been to the city knows that there are quite a few residents of New York who support their fellow man.  But the city’s reputation took a hit, as it’s been reported by Colorlines and other sources that no one helped the woman as she was trying to find her sons.  Instead of getting the help she needed, doors were slammed in her face.   Now, both of her sons are dead.

According to the New York Daily News: 

According to the sister, a dripping-wet Moore banged on doors looking for help in the middle of the hurricane, but couldn’t find anyone willing to help her.

“They answered the door and said, ‘I don’t know you. I’m not going to help you,’” said the sister. “My sister’s like 5-foot-3, 130 pounds. She looks like a little girl. She’s going to come to you and you’re going to slam the door in her face and say, ‘I don’t know you, I can’t help you’?’”

Moore spent the night huddled on a doorstep as the hurricane’s assault continued. At daybreak, her sister said, the desperate mother walked until she found a police car and related her heart-breaking story.

The UK’s Daily Mail also had something to say about the incident:

Her cousin Nancy Jean, 41, fought back tears as she described the ordeal.

‘I can’t believe the way she was treated by the people she went to for help,’ she said.

‘The first person she knocked on, she begged them and said: “Please call 911”.

‘They told her: “I don’t know you” and closed the door. She tried another door but they turned the lights off.

My final thoughts on this story…

This is what this nation has become…a fearful, untrusting, uncaring society. I cannot get into the minds of the people who closed their doors to this mother. I have been guilty of not answering a late night knock on my door when alone. However, a media that bombards us with so-called criminals in hoodies with the most ominous looking crooks either black or latino; movies that incite an ignorant, unbalanced society to more violence; politicians who lie, deceive and give racial innuendos for political gain rather than doing their job of leading and helping ALL in the nation; and corporations who operate from sheer greed by buying politicians with little concern for the consumer and citizens…all create a volatile environment that sets the stage for citizens too afraid to open their doors to help others who don’t look like them.

The answer lies in YOUR hands. Vote for the mayor, governor, president and ballot measures that best speak to your personal values. Back it up by living your life the way you want to be treated every day and in your hour of need.

It’s Global Warming, Stupid

Can we finally talk about — OH HORRORS! — Climate Change?

During grade school in the 5th grade in 1960, I remember my teachers talking about global warming and that we didn’t have much time to stop gas emissions and pollution.

That was 52 years ago!!

Between then and now, corporations have bought Republican politicians to deregulate their pollution of the environment and turn a blind eye to the rapid destruction of the planet. These politicians in bed with the polluters convinced voters that there is no such thing as global warming and the scientists have no clue what they are talking about.

Al Gore was ridiculed beyond belief for his stance on global warming. I bet you didn’t see his movie, An Inconvenient Truth? I understand. Media has avoided talking about global warming, and Fox News even ridicules it. After all, it is God’s will, not those pesky scientists who can predict what will happen. Listening to Gore is boring with his dry voice and details, so you probably had no interest in seeing his movie. But if you had listened to him in 2000 and had seen his movie, you would have been shocked to the core. You would have known 12 years ago that Hurricane Sandy was coming…and there’d be more extreme, violent ones after her.

Fast forward to Katrina, Irene and Sandy. Extreme weather is now the norm. Instead of 200 year storms, we now have them every two years…and exponentially with a vengeance.

Clarity, however, is not beyond reach. Hurricane Sandy demands it: At least 40 U.S. deaths. Economic losses expected to climb as high as $50 billion. Eight million homes without power. Hundreds of thousands of people evacuated. More than 15,000 flights grounded. Factories, stores, and hospitals shut. Lower Manhattan dark, silent, and underwater.

As we read in Atlas Drugged: Ayn Rand Be Damned!, this book of satiric fiction comes to life as we see the state of Florida hit by a devastating hurricane left helpless because FEMA has been privatized (sound familiar?), and the State has no money or even the resources to rescue the crushed and sinking state. Even the rich, who can afford the privatized rescue services, learn that all their money cannot buy services that don’t exist within their sinking State. Almost everyone and every business is crippled and needs help. 

This election in 2012 is probably the most critical election we have ever had.

Mitt Romney and the Republican Party have said they want to privatize FEMA and dismantle many important government agencies like the EPA that would keep the polluters in check. With their hands in the pockets of these private companies who would “rescue us from FEMA,” Mitt Romney and his merry band of thieves aren’t concerned about America or its citizens…they are too busy lining their pockets to think about us.

Please vote to reelect President Obama who is concerned about global warming and working to do something about it. And lets all finally have this discussion and work with him to protect us from the polluters.
